Chapter 7: Strategy Groups

  • Reflect on the following statement found on page 107, “Why not start grouping kids together by strategy need rather than reading level?” What would this look like?
  • What is the true meaning of “flexible” groups? What does it look like? 
  • Think of a time you have been “grouped” and it was not a good fit for you. How did you feel? Were you motivated to do your best or were you discouraged?

We will be having a 10 point quiz over Chapter 1 - Words Their Way

Read the entire chapter for a solid knowledge base. Pay special attention to the following areas:

  1. What is orthography?
  2. What is the definition of Word Study?
  3. How should a word study approach be designed? Explicit instruction? Application? Both?
  4. What is general knowledge and specific knowledge (Purpose of Word study)?
  5. In the layers of English Orthography what is the alphabet, pattern, and meaning layer?
  6. What is the instructional level and zone of proximal development?
  7. Have a brief knowledge/understanding of the stages of spelling development.
  8. Have a brief knowledge/understanding of the stages of the Synchrony of Literacy Development (emergent, beginning, transitional, intermediate/Advanced).
  9. What is the most consistent predictor of reading achievement?
  10. What does it mean for students to learn about words their way?
