Read the entire chapter for a solid knowledge base. Pay special attention to the following areas:

- What is the definition of Word Study?
- How should a word study approach be designed? Explicit instruction? Application? Both?
- What is general knowledge and specific knowledge (Purpose of Word study)?
- In the layers of English Orthography what is the alphabet, pattern, and meaning layer?
- What is the instructional level and zone of proximal development?
- Have a brief knowledge/understanding of the stages of spelling development.
- Have a brief knowledge/understanding of the stages of the Synchrony of Literacy Development (emergent, beginning, transitional, intermediate/Advanced).

- What does it mean for students to learn about words their way?
