Last evening a few of us decided to walk around town before dark. At the end of our street we came upon two elderly women sitting on a park bench watching the sunset. We learned this is a ritual of several of the ladies in the retirement community that is part of Diakonie Neuendettelsau. They spoke excellent English and we began our conversation by asking them where they learned to speak "our" language. It turns out that in 1957 they traveled to England to learn to speak English and begin their training as nurses and midwives. After three years of training, they traveled as missionaries to Tanzania and served there the next 27 years. They retired back to Neuendettelsau in 1987. I truly wished we had met these ladies earlier in the evening and had been able to hear more about their time in Tanzania, but the sun was set and their day was at an end. As they departed arm in arm I got a true picture of what a life of service really is - joy.
