Today a very lovely guide named Astrid gave us a tour of the Castle Church and the Town Church. For me the churches have such significance for me personally as the last time I was here I spent most of my free time in either one of the churches reflecting on whether I wanted to become a mother. As I stood by the baptismal font in the Town Church wearing my daughter's baptismal cross and baby ring on a chain around my neck I was reflecting on the interconnectedness of one's vocation and daily lived experience. As I continue to discover, my calling as an educator (especially at an institution such as Wartburg) is inextricably linked with who I am as a mother, wife, friend, colleague etc. The discussions this afternoon centered around the "Gift and Task of Higher Education" should prove to be both interesting and insightful. I look forward to hearing what my colleagues have to say about their own journeys of personal and professional discovery as it relates to serving at an institution of higher education.
